Barred soap back in vogue

soapGoodbye plastic soap dispensers, bars of soap are back in vogue. Following decades of decline, sales of barred soap have risen by nearly 3 per cent in the UK over the past year, according to research from Kantar Worldpanel.

In the year to September 2018, British shoppers spent £68.3 million on barred soap, up 2.9 per cent from £66.4 million in the previous year.

The rise in sales is credited to Millennials’ concern for the environment and a willingness to make a difference however small. Sales of barred soap grew faster than both liquid soaps and shower products over the period, suggesting shoppers are making the swap to the zero waste option.

The research found that 44 per cent of people are now ‘more concerned’ about single-use plastic, and 70 per cent say they play to shop more sustainably.

Soaps are also emerging as a more luxurious alternative to bottled liquid with more and more variations coming on the market in terms of size, shape and smell.
