New brand dubbed Australia’s first social enterprise ice cream

New ice cream brand, Elato, is making its mark on the Australian ice cream market with a mission to reduce world hunger and food waste.

Rolled out nationwide via distributors Monde Nissin Australia, the Australian-made ice cream brand commits to contribute half of its profits to food rescue non-profit organisation OzHarvest to tackle food waste and help those in need.

“The underlying motivation for Elato has been to use the enjoyment of ice cream to do good in the world,” said Roz Kaldor-Aroni, creator and founder of Elato. “This is why Elato is a social enterprise committed to using businesses to help improve the world with at least 50 per cent of our net profit supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals aimed at ending poverty, hunger and feeding the planet sustainably.”

Currently a scientist and formerly a Melbourne-based lawyer, Kaldor-Aroni developed her own ice cream formula during three years and trained in Italy and Canada. With her science background, she found a way to make ice creams that keep the authentic texture while reducing sugars and removing chemicals.

The key ingredients used for Elato’s products are sourced from suppliers committed to sustainability, regeneration, fair trade and a positive social impact. Elato ice cream is made based on a formula that uses 30 per cent less added sugar and egg yolk instead of chemical emulsifiers.

“I wanted to create an ice cream that was better for you without compromising on a deliciously indulgent taste and texture,” Kaldor-Aroni said.

The range consists of three flavours – dairy-based triple vanilla and cold brew decaf, and vegan dark chocolate – with more in development. Elato is sold nationwide through independent stores at RRP$11.99.
