Coles retains Marine Stewardship Council sustainable seafood rating

Coles has been named Australia’s best sustainable seafood supermarket by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), for the sixth successive year.

The supermarket group continues to use MSC’s third-party certification program to help address environmental issues related to fishing, and maintain traceable certified sourcing in the supply chain of eligible Coles own-brand wild-caught seafood. The brand boasts a ‘blue fish tick’ on 30 of its products.

MSC’s Sustainable Seafood Awards recognises and awards organisations and individuals working together to end overfishing and ensure seafood supplies are safeguarded for future generations. The awards are jointly run with the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).

Mures Tasmania took the award for Best Responsible Retailer award by the ASC and Sustainable Seafood Community Champion award by the MSC. The brand will be celebrating the week with a special menu and sustainable seafood meal kits available to go.

A Lifetime Achievement was bestowed on Guy Leyland who led the WA MSC project over the last decade, supporting Western Australian fisheries engaged with the MSC.

Discount grocer Aldi Australia shared the Best Sustainable Seafood Product award for its Ocean Rise Skinless and Boneless pink salmon with Mars Petcare Australia for its Dine Fresh & Fine Adult wet cat food in jelly tuna & salmon.

Best Responsible Product went to Bidfood for its Nordic Select salmon range, while Highly Commended Responsible Seafood Product for KB Seafood’s Fish Goujons.

Coles chief executive commercial and Express, Greg Davis, said he is proud of the company’s achievement, adding that all Coles own-brand seafood is responsibly sourced.

“Farms and fisheries we work with are all independently certified or assessed to help reduce potential environmental risks, including impacts on surrounding ecosystems, illegal and unregulated fishing, and overfishing,” he said.

Anne Gabriel, MSC Oceania program director, said that with the impacts of climate change growing, sustainable practices are more important than ever.
