Nespresso has launched paper-based home compostable coffee capsules that aim to offer consumers more sustainable options in coffee making.
Guillaume Le Cunff, CEO of Nespresso, said the innovation expands the eco-friendlier choices already offered to consumers, which includes its aluminium capsules launched in 2020.
“Pushing the boundaries of fine coffee experiences is part of the Nespresso innovation, and since becoming a B Corp earlier this year, we’re more committed than ever to widening the sustainable choices we offer our consumers,” said Le Cunff.
The new coffee capsules feature patented technology, including a biopolymer lining that protects the coffee from oxidation and preserves the quality in transport, storage, and during the high-pressure extraction process in Nespresso machines.
In addition, the product is certified for both home and industrial composting by TUV Austria, an international certification body. The capsules are also accepted in selected public biowaste bins.
“Our home compostable paper-based capsule is also retro-compatible with the Nespresso Original machines,” added Julia Lauricella, head of the global R&D centre for systems and coffee machines.
Nespresso’s paper-based capsules will pilot in France and Switzerland early next year and will be launched in other European countries in the future months.
