PepsiCo promises to cull sodium and ‘deliver more diverse ingredients’

(Source: Big Stock)

PepsiCo will cut the sodium content of its US Lay’s Classic Potato Chips as part of the company’s new goal to reduce sodium across the majority of its global convenient food portfolio by FY30.

The move will result in the potato chips product to have a sodium level of 140mg per 28g serving.

The company said it is seeking at least 75 per cent of its convenient food portfolio volume to meet or be below category sodium targets by FY30.

In addition, PepsiCo aims to deliver 145 billion portions of diverse ingredients per year in the portfolio, also by FY30, with each portion to provide about 10 per cent of the suggested daily amount of an ingredient.

“We are in a constant cycle of innovation to reimagine the foods we make and how we make them so we can bring better choices to our consumers, without ever compromising on taste,” said René Lammers, EVP and chief science officer at PepsiCo.

“Consumers enjoy our products more than one billion times a day, which provides an opportunity – and the privilege – to have an impact. We set a high bar to improve the nutritional profile of our products, and these new goals reaffirm our ambitions.”
