To mark its 180th year, Penfolds has collaborated with renowned Japanese fashion designer Nigo and launched a new edition of its flagship wine called The Grange by Nigo.
Nigo – the creative director of Human Made and the artistic director of Kenzo – is known for his innovative and future-thinking vision.
The packaging design of the one-off series is inspired by Nigo’s visit to Penfolds’ Magill Estate Winery in 2022 and his time reviewing archive material from the brand’s history. It features a bold and colourful grape graphic and the Penfolds logo, reimagined through Human Made’s typography.
“I have been a collector of Grange for many years, but it wasn’t until I visited Penfolds Magill Estate that I truly understood the craftsmanship and history behind the historic wine,” said Nigo.
The Grange by Nigo heroes the current 2019 vintage of Grange made from Shiraz grapes. Each box is individually numbered and includes a bandana, a bottleneck tag designed by Nigo, and an authenticity certificate.
Aside from Grange’s reimagining, Nigo also designed silk rugs for this series, with 25 available worldwide. The silk rug’s silk-dyed purple grape design mirrors the wine’s secondary pack, and each rug is handwoven by Nepalese artists who spent two months making each piece.
Kristy Keyte, CMO for Penfolds, said collaborating with Nigo was inspired by Penfolds’ history of pushing boundaries in winemaking.
“As a collector, Nigo understands the reputation of Grange and its legacy,” she continued.
“He was able to create a limited-edition approach that is both playful and fresh while remaining respectful to the history of the wine. We have never done this before, and the result is brave and refreshing.”
The Grange by Nigo release is available for an RRP of $1350 for 750ml (1500 available) and $2500 for 1.5L (150 available) gift boxes.
The Grange by Nigo rugs are available for an RRP of $10,000 each globally via expressions of interest at Space Furniture and www.penfolds.com.
