Q&A: A golden Eastern tradition drops into Western wellness

Practicing lawyer Katrina Uttam’s heritage involved ghee, which has been used for centuries in Eastern traditions. Katrina’s her own great grandfather started each day by adding a spoonful to his tea to line the gut and aid digestion. It had the added side effect of making his skin glow.

Katrina saw that in Western markets, ghee remained positioned as a cooking ingredient, overlooked as a wellness staple. That insight became Drops of Gold, an ingestible wellness product that repositions ghee as an aspirational daily ritual.

Inside FMCG: Can you tell us briefly about ghee’s traditions and its properties as a wellness product?

Katrina Uttam: We see Drops of Gold ghee as part of our customers’ daily wellness routine rather than purely a cooking ingredient. Whilst ghee (also known as clarified butter) has been used for centuries in cooking, we wanted to introduce a premium product focused on its beauty and wellness benefits. Our ghee is organic, grass-fed, and made locally in Australia. It naturally contains vitamins A, K, E and D. It also has a smooth, mousse-like texture. This makes it easy to add to coffee, tea, smoothies, toast, and soups without any fuss. Simple, luxurious, and genuinely good for you.

IFMCG: When and where did you launch Drops of Gold?

KA: Our official launch was in 2025 into select health food stores in Sydney. Following strong customer demand, we launched online and now deliver across Australia. The decision to go online was driven by our community. Our very first enquiry outside of health food shops came from a customer in Perth who sent us an Instagram DM asking how to purchase. That moment told us everything: we needed to be accessible to as many Australians as possible!

IFMCG: How do you balance the time and responsibilities of maintaining your role as a practising lawyer with running Drops of Gold?

KA: A 5am wake-up call is a must! I’ll often manage Drops of Gold in the morning and evening, before and after my 9-5. Our customers are always the priority, and I love engaging with the community as much as I can.

My experience juggling different priorities gives me a real appreciation for our customers, who are often navigating equally busy schedules. It’s exactly why Drops of Gold is designed to feel easy yet a little luxurious. A spoonful a day; it really is that simple.

IFMCG: How do approach educating Australian consumers about a product the vast majority of whom would be unfamilar with?

KA: This is our favourite part! We see Drops of Gold at a similar stage to where matcha was around five years ago, firmly in the early adopter phase. Most consumers already know what ghee is; they’re simply looking for inspiration on how to use it. So, our focus is on showing people how to incorporate it as a wellness addition, supported by content creators and influencers who use it in their own routines. Our two favourite ways? A morning coffee or butter replacement on toast.

IFMCG: What strategies have you leveraged to position ghee as a wellness essential rather than just a cooking ingredient?

KA: We’ve taken a strong interest in our customers’ key pain point: finding a completely natural wellness product that fits into a busy life. In many ways, Drops of Gold is exactly what they’re looking for. Our role is simply to guide them on how to incorporate it.

Our tagline is ‘spoon, sip and glow’, and we often include a golden spoon with orders. The goal is to transform a simple daily habit into a small, accessible luxury for even the busiest individuals.

IFMCG: What are your aspirations for the growth and development of Drops of Gold in the next 12 months?

KA: Our aim is to introduce Drops of Gold to more Australians and help them discover the wellness benefits of ghee. We’ll also focus on growing our community, because we want Drops of Gold to be known not just as a product, but as a place where customers come together to share their wellness tips and rituals.
