Tetra Pak advances paper-based ice cream packaging

Tetra Pak is expanding its paper-based packaging portfolio into the ice cream category, taking the next step in commercialising a new wrapping solution developed specifically for ice cream producers.

The wrap is made from up to 85 per cent paper sourced from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources, helping ice cream brands stand out on the shelf while delivering the performance needed throughout the cold chain, the company said.

The move comes as brands and producers seek to respond to evolving consumer preferences, with research from Market Insights showing that nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of global consumers consider sustainability an important factor in ice cream packaging. Meanwhile, 16 per cent prefer paper packaging for the category.

“Ice cream is one of the world’s most loved food categories, and innovation now extends beyond flavours and formats,” Peter Lindstrom, VP of food solutions at Tetra Pak, commented.

“Tetra Pak Ice Cream Wrap gives producers a new way to create a distinctive consumer experience, combining the familiar appearance of paper with the functionality required for ice cream products.”

The company said the wrap draws on more than 70 years of expertise in paper-based food packaging and a deep understanding of ice cream production. Its thin profile and advanced multi-layer structure are set to protect products while supporting reliable operations.

The solution is reportedly undergoing trials with European producers to assess its performance in live production environments and gather consumer insights ahead of a phased rollout in the fourth quarter.

Earlier in July, Tetra Pak also introduced a paper-based carton packaging format for shelf-stable tuna, in partnership with Spanish seafood producer Jealsa.
