The launching was held at the Customs House in Sydney by the federal minister for Small and Family Business, the hon Craig Laundy MP and the federal shadow minister for Trade and Investment, the hon Jason Clare MP.
The event attracted significant interest from Sydney’s business community and was attended by prominent business people, leading company executives, Australian based Daigou, members of the Chinese business community and the media.
“The Association will give the Daigou trading channel in Australia greater recognition, a unified voice and a much-needed framework for increased cooperation and improved business practices across the trading ecosystem,” said Dr Mathew McDougall, an expert on doing business with China and founder of DaigouSales.com.
McDougall is also the inaugural president of the Association. The Daigou channel of commerce, which involves locally based Chinese purchasing commodities for customers (family, friends and others) in mainland China and shipping the products back to China, is recognised as a key trading channel for Australian businesses. The Daigou market in Australia is estimated at $850M and has a reported 60,000 – 70,000 Chinese living in Australia undertaking such trading practice.
“Despite the prevalence of the D2C (daigou-to-consumer) trading channel in Australia, there has been little understanding or formal recognition by Government of the importance of this channel for Australian businesses until now,” Dr McDougall added.
“Mainland Chinese actively seek out Australian products. They value the quality, innovation and compliance around the development of our products. Skin care, supplements, cleaning items, mother and baby items as well as health, medical and wellness products are in high demand.
He also said Daigous help Australian businesses as the benefit from the Daigou community and it also provide an opportunity for many more Australian companies in China.
“Australian businesses are not only making great sales, they are also being given the opportunity to introduce their great brands into China through the Daigou trading channel – which is forming part of their overall export strategy. The Association is a mutually beneficial organisation. It will support greater cooperation among Australian based Daigou and the Australian business community and ensure all parties are operating in accordance with a set code of conduct for cross border trading,” said Dr McDougall.
“It will assist in the resolution of issues and provide training, education and networking activities for those involved in Daigou cross border trade. Importantly, the Association will also act as a voice for the growing sector, facilitate and support greater involvement across the community and inform policy makers of key issues involving the sector.”
The Association is based in Sydney and headed up by Dr Mathew McDougall, president, and Richard Yuan, executive director. Yuan is also chairman of the Australia China Entrepreneurs Club and an international ambassador of the SME Association of Australia.
