Pregnant woman finds needles in grapes

grapes needlesAnother fruit needle scare has hit Australia and this time in a bag of grapes.

Victoria Police is investigating a report that a couple from Melbourne found two small needles in the bag of seedless grapes they bought at Woolworths in Craigieburn on Tuesday.

Skender Hasa and Shams Alsubaiy told 9 News Melbourne that Alsubaiy pricked her finger with a needle when she reached in the bag.

“I thank God I didn’t eat them. I’m pregnant and I don’t want anything to happen,” she said.

Hasa said he found a needle stuck in the grape after cutting it in half. They found two pieces of grapes with the needles.

Woolworths told 9 News Melbourne it was working with the authorities to investigate the matter.

“All contamination reports referred to police will be investigated thoroughly, with the safety and well being of the public at the forefront of our minds,” police said in a statement.

Consumers were urged to report any similar cases of fruit contamination to their local council or police. The police warned anyone found contaminating food products can be charged with penalties of up to 10 years in jail.

The news comes after several cases of contaminated strawberries across Australia last year. A Queensland farm employee My Ut Trinh was charged with seven counts of contamination of goods.
