Tesco unveils extensive plant-based range

Supermarket Tesco has introduced a plant-based condiment range to address the growing demand for plant-based options in the UK.

Tesco will also launch 30 more plant-based food products this month such as wraps, sandwiches, seasonings and dressings alongside the new sauce range.

The grocery said demand for vegan foods soared by 40 per cent since it unveiled its plant-based brand, Plant Chef, a few months ago.

“Plant-based/vegan food is the biggest culinary movement this century and finding a good choice of complementary sauces as part of a high street shop has not been that easy,” Tesco’s director of plant-based innovation Derek Sarno said.

Tesco reported that Hellman’s Vegan Mayo recorded growth of nearly 400 per cent in the last year and Tabasco Mild Green Pepper sauce is up by nearly 300 per cent.

“Tesco was among the first supermarkets to launch a ready-made vegan lunch range and is now leading the way in terms of vegan condiments, a sector neglected by other retailers,” Dominika Piasecka, spokeswoman for The Vegan Society, said.

“Being huge fans of Derek Sarno’s Wicked Kitchen vegan range, we have high expectations for these products and are pleased to see them priced the same as their non-vegan counterparts.”

The Wicked Kitchen range will be exclusively sold at Tesco and includes Dreamy Beetroot Dressing, Mazin’ Mango Sauce, Hella’ Horseradish and Mustard Sauce, Sriracha Sauce, Sticky Teriyaki Sauce and Wicked Asian Style BBQ Sauce.

The sauces will be available in up to 800 stores across the UK.
