A US company, Sigma Phase, has won an award for a new appliance that rapidly freezes ice cream in single serves from ‘pods’ in a style reminiscent of Nestle’s Nespresso machines.
The invention, called ColdSnap, has won a CES 2021 Innovation honoree recognition for home appliances.
The appliance – which even resembles a Nespresso maker in some ways – sits on a bench. The pods, which are shelf stable and do not require refrigeration, can be converted into frozen ice cream in just two minutes.

The company said there is no need to prepare the ColdSnap pods and no cleanup needed after using it. It can whip up ice cream, frozen yoghurt, coffee, smoothies, healthy shakes (nutraceuticals) and cocktails.

“We are honoured to receive this prestigious CES award for our ColdSnap system,” said Matthew Fonte, president, Sigma Phase.
“We have assembled a first-class team and, together, we are moving quickly to create something exciting that doesn’t exist in the market today… Our mission is to transform the way frozen confections are produced, transported, purchased and enjoyed.”
The CES Innovation Awards will be announced at the virtual CES Forum from January 11-14.
