Nestle will halt production of Fantales – the chocolate-covered caramels known for their movie stories on the wrappers – from next month.
The move follows a decline in sales and the need for significant upgrades to continue producing the chocolate lollies at the confectioner’s Melbourne factory.
Andrew Lawrey, GM for Nestle Oceania Confectionery, said that despite the “sense of nostalgia” Fantales evokes, people simply aren’t buying them as often as they used to.
“We know our decision to stop making Fantales will be sad news for many people,” said Lawrey. “Many of us grew up with Fantales and had fond memories of them.”
He added that maintenance of the Fantales line has become increasingly difficult, and replacing the equipment was not viable given the product’s declining sales.
Fantales were first created in 1930 – and for generations, the brand has been synonymous with the movies, with its famous ‘fan tales’ of actors and musicians on its wrappers.
“While investment in the future of Fantales is not sustainable, we’re continuing to invest in our other Allen’s lollies, including fan favourites such as Snakes Alive, Party Mix and Minties,” Lawrey concluded.
The last production of Fantales will be in mid-July, and the confectionery will thereafter be available only until stocks run out. All staff from the Fantales production line will be transferred to other roles within the factory.
