The founder of Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company and Pure Ceylon Tea, Merrill J. Fernando, has passed away at the age of 93.

After spending four decades working as an employee of a British-owned export firm in Sri Lanka and bulk supplying tea to the country, Fernando launched the Dilmah brand in Australia in 1985.

His breakthrough came when he won a contract to pack Farmland tea bags for G.J. Coles’ supermarket chain.

Dilmah CEO, Dilhan Fernando, said his father’s legacy will be “everlasting” and added his “remarkable journey and unwavering passion have left an indelible mark on the world of tea”.

“His spirit will forever inspire us to strive for excellence and make a positive impact on the lives of others.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to all who have shared their condolences and supported us during this difficult time.”

Dilmah is Sri Lanka’s biggest global brand, with products sold in more than 100 countries. It is among the top 10 tea brands worldwide.

In the Australian market, the company derives about 85 per cent of its sales from retail and 15 per cent from hotels, hospitality, and food service.

In March, the company said it would exit the Australian market as it was losing money and unable to make a profit while market shares fell.
