Huggies has updated its newborn and infant range of nappies, seeking to provide better protection for babies’ delicate skin.

The new nappies are enriched with a layer of zinc oxide, a compound commonly used in rash creams to help protect skin and prevent irritation.

Dr Deshan Sebaratnam, a pediatric dermatologist consulted by Huggies, explained that the environment in a nappy is the “perfect recipe” for skin irritation, making diaper changes uncomfortable.

“Dermatologists have been using zinc-based barrier creams for decades to help protect baby’s skin from irritation, as well as help re-establish its barrier,” said Sebaratnam.

Aside from the zinc-enriched layer, the diapers also feature a wide-pocketed waistband, a soft outer cover, and a wetness indicator.

Gabrielle Davidson, MD of Kimberly-Clark ANZ, maker of Huggies, added that as a mother of two, she knows first-hand the effort parents go through to protect their babies’ skin.

“At Huggies, we want parents to feel confident about protecting their baby against skin irritation,” she concluded. “That’s why we’re extremely proud to launch Australia’s first zinc-enriched nappy.”

The new Huggies newborn and infant nappies are available for an RRP of $22 for bulk packs in Coles, Woolworths and leading retailers nationwide.
