Australia’s largest recycling company Visy has acquired the collapsed Victorian plastics recycling business Advanced Circular Polymers (ACP).
Located in Somerton, Melbourne, ACP reprocessed plastics from kerbside recycling collections, with the capacity of more than 30,000 tonnes of plastics annually.
Mark De Wit, CEO of Visy, said the company aims to prevent hard-to-recycle plastics from going to landfill.
“We’ll be on site from this week to begin the clean-up process. We are committed to processing the over 1000 tonnes of unprocessed material on the site.”
Visy will send some of the material to its food grade recycled plastics manufacturing site in Smithfield, New South Wales. The plastics will be used to create food grade rPET and rHDPE containers.
The company has signed a five-year lease with the landlord to process these hard-to-recycle plastics.
Visy currently has 150 global operations, predominately in Australia and New Zealand. In 2022, the firm completed a $29 million multi-state investment to divert 38,000 tonnes of plastics (equivalent to 1.9 billion plastic bottles) from going to landfill or being exported overseas each year.
