Australian recycler and remanufacturer Visy has collaborated with Australian firms on a trial project dubbed Re-In-Can-Ation, which aims to create a sustainable can with 83 per cent recycled content.

The beverage container was created in collaboration with Lion, brewer Stone & Wood, aluminium coil producer Novelis, and miner Rio Tinto.

The project is expected to run for 18 months. The beverage can is made from aluminium coil that contains a high percentage of recycled content as well as low-carbon virgin (primary aluminium) material.

According to Kate Baker, Visy’s GM of circular economy and sustainability, these cans contain more than 25 per cent more recycled aluminium than the Australian norm.

“By packing this can with recycled content, we’re conserving resources and keeping more waste out of landfills,” said Baker.

“Even better, these cans are easily recycled after use, so you can enjoy your beer while contributing to a circular economy.”

In addition, Lion’s sustainability director, Justin Merrell, stated that the predicted 59 per cent decrease in carbon emissions achieved with this packaging is a remarkable example of a robust circular economy.

Last year, Visy collaborated with two solar energy companies, Energy Aware and 1K5° Commercial, to install solar panels at various sites in Australia, as part of its initiative in the sustainability journey.
