Australian packaging company Visy has made a $42.5 million investment to upgrade its recycling and remanufacturing site in Colaroo, Victoria, with a Drum Pulper system.
A Drum Pulper can recycle any piece of waste paper that goes through a kerb bin into new packaging so it never has to go to landfills or be exported.
The upgrade is part of the company’s commitment to invest $2 billion over the next 10 years to reduce landfill waste, cut emissions and create more green-collar jobs in the country.
Anthony Pratt, executive chairman of Visy, said the upgrade could double the site’s capability, diverting up to 180,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard yearly.
An Aussie first, the Drum Pulper system could repurpose kerbside paper and cardboard into 100 per cent recycled paper and corrugated packaging for the agricultural sector and food and beverage brands.
“We’ve truly closed the loop on paper and cardboard recycling,” Pratt said. “Put your used pizza box in the recycle bin, and we’ll make another box.”
Visy’s Drum Pulper system was also made possible by co-investment from the Victorian and Federal Governments.
