Gippsland Dairy launches yoghurt range with less plastic packaging

Chobani Australia’s subsidiary Gippsland Dairy has introduced new packaging with an emphasis on sustainability for its 160gm products, cutting 44 per cent of the plastic used.

Chobani’s removal of the product’s lid is part of the company’s commitment to the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (Apco) and the 2025 National Packaging Targets, which include reducing unnecessary or problematic plastics. It follows the removal of the embedded plastic spoon last year as part of Victoria’s ban on single-use plastic cutlery.

Chobani expects to eliminate 95,000kg of plastic from its business by the end of this year, as well as to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with sourcing and transporting the packaging (lids and spoons) through its supply chain and to retailers.

“Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey – one that demands time, effort and an unwavering dedication to continuous improvement,” said Chobani’s GM of ESG & general counsel, Tim Browne.

“We’ve worked closely with our industry partners to explore innovative approaches to deliver on our commitment in line with the nationally recognised industry targets.”

The new packaging design retains the Gippsland Dairy 160gm pot appearance and includes the original black lid in the product artwork. The pot will now have a black band across the top that resembles the lid, allowing customers to easily recognise the product on the shelves.
