Montague Farms has kicked off its annual Kissabel apple harvest, with nearly 36,000 kilograms expected this season.
Known for their striking red flesh and zesty flavour, the specialty apples are grown in small volumes across orchards in the Adelaide Hills and Yarra Valley.
The Kissabel range was developed in France’s Loire Valley after more than 20 years of research and includes several red-fleshed varieties bred for colour and taste.
This year’s harvest includes the Kissabel Summer variety, recognised for its pink-orange skin and vibrant red interior, followed by the deeper-toned Kissabel Berry.
Montague plans to expand its plantings this winter with 27,000 new trees across central Victoria and Batlow, NSW.
The company also intends to introduce two new varieties this year – one with a sweeter profile and another with a juicier option with a balanced sweet-tart flavour.
Kissabel apples will be available at select independent greengrocers.
