The Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFCG) has lodged its pre-budget submission for the 2026 to 2027 federal budget.
From 2023 to 2025, the AFGC said the food and grocery manufacturing sector generated $173 billion in turnover, and employed almost 300,000 Australians.
“Food and grocery manufacturing is not just about providing everyday essentials to Australians – it is a cornerstone of our economy and a major source of jobs, particularly in regional communities,” said Colm Maguire, AFGC CEO.
“Our submission outlines practical, sector-wide reforms that will benefit the entire nation, supporting productivity, innovation, and economic resilience.”
The council called for tax incentives to boost productivity, a national skills audit, progressing with international free trade agreements, streamlining regulations, and more.
Maguire added: “This is not about throwing money around, it’s about targeted investment that lifts productivity, strengthens regional economies, and delivers high-return outcomes for Australia.”
