Pams seafood is now 100 per cent responsibly and ethically sourced, as part of Foodstuffs’ goal to transition all its private label seafood to meet responsible sourcing standards by the end of this year.
This applies across Foodstuffs’ private label brands, including Pams, Pams Value, Pams Finest and Gilmours, covering products where seafood is the primary ingredient, from tuna and salmon to prawns, hoki and more.
To meet the standards, suppliers must be able to trace seafood back to its source and demonstrate action on key environmental issues, including bycatch and shark finning.
While most actively ranged products have met the policy requirements, Pams mackerel remained in the supply chain due to its long shelf life, following a decision to stop offering the product because of overfishing concerns.
Foodstuffs Own Brands GM Lisa Oldershaw said the achievement gives customers confidence that Pams meet strong environmental and ethical standards.
“Our customers expect us to make responsible choices when sourcing products, and that’s exactly what this commitment was about,” Oldershaw said.
“Whether it’s a can of tuna, a packet of prawns or battered fish for dinner, customers can be confident every Pams seafood product meets clear environmental standards for responsible sourcing.”
Around 70 per cent of Own Brands seafood products are Marine Stewardship Council-certified, with the remaining 30 per cent certified through other programmes such as the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Best Aquaculture Practices.
“Our work isn’t done,” Oldershaw added.
“Responsible sourcing is an ongoing commitment, and we’ll continue working with suppliers to make sure our seafood products meet the standards our customers expect.”
