Mondelez International has introduced a gluten-free version of its original Oreo cookie to the Australian market.

The new product, Oreo Gluten Free Original, features the traditional chocolate sandwich cookie and vanilla creme filling but is manufactured without gluten ingredients.

According to data from a July Quantium report, 36.8 per cent of Australian shoppers purchase gluten-free products across supermarkets.

“Oreo has been a household favourite in Australia for decades, but for those managing a gluten-free diet, that experience has always been out of reach,” said Andra Dempste at Mondelez International in ANZ.

The product in the 95g packs carries an RRP of $4.50 is available at Woolworths, with subsequent availability scheduled for Coles on June 15 and IGA on June 18.

To accompany the product launch, the company has also released two gluten-free dessert recipes utilising the cookies: one for brownies and another for a no-bake cheesecake.

Mondelez International operates six manufacturing sites and one national distribution centre within Australia. Its brand portfolio in the country includes Cadbury Dairy Milk, The Natural Confectionery Company, In A Biskit, Olina’s Bakehouse, and Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

According to data from Euromonitor International, Oreo is the highest-selling cookie brand globally by retail value share.

Earlier, Mondelez upgraded its Melbourne confectionery plant with an $8 million investment.
