Packaging company Visy has produced the first glass bottles at its new glass recycling and manufacturing facility in Yatala, Queensland, four years after construction began.
Once fully operational, the facility will manufacture up to 1 billion glass bottles and jars annually, with an average of 70 per cent recycled content.
The plant is powered by two oxygen-fuelled furnaces, which Visy said use less energy to produce new glass packaging than traditional facilities.
Visy CEO Mark De Wit said producing the first glass from the new furnace was a significant moment for the project team.
“You spend years looking at drawings, construction schedules and progress reports,” he said.
“Seeing the first glass come out of the furnace is the moment it all becomes real.”
