Australian company The Why Meat Co has created a gluten-free, plant-based sausage roll made with pea protein, harvested from yellow and green split peas.
The new products are available in Gluten-Free and Wheat pastry varieties.
Food technologist Emma White said they wanted to make a product that had good flavour and was healthy. She was frustrated with the lack of choices of vegan and gluten-free foods in the market.
“I’m proud to have created a party and snack product the whole family can enjoy that is a healthier option,” said White.
Food Frontier’s 2020 State of the Industry report highlighted an increasing consumer demand for meat alternatives due to health concerns. Last year, retail sales of plant-based foods surged by 46 per cent as Australian retailers expanded their product ranges to more than 200 brands. Meat substitutes now account for 42 per cent of plant-based meat products stocked by major retailers.
