Low-carb keto pioneer Locako is expanding into the UK five years after introducing its collagen snack bars and coffee creamers in Australia.

In September, the brand would initially launch three keto collagen bars into more than 500 Holland and Barret stores.

“Locako, which stands for low-carb keto, began as a venture to make it easier for Australians, including myself, to stick to a ketogenic diet or embrace a healthier low-carb, low-sugar lifestyle,” explained Ally Mellor, founder of Locako.

“It is incredible to see how the collagen products I initially experimented with in my kitchen have grown into a proud Australian business with products on shelves 16,000 kilometres away.”

Since its launch in 2017, Mellor said she hopes to double its revenue off the back of the UK expansion and local supermarket and Chemist Warehouse sales.

“While tea-loving Britons haven’t jumped on the collagen coffee trend as much as Aussies, their sweet tooth has been driving sales of our DIY mixes, such as collagen brownies, cookie dough, and mousse, as well as collagen snack bars,” she said.

In addition, two of the company’s major distributors in the UK, Tree of Life and Tropicana, said that the keto products have been doing well in London’s Planet Organic.

“Only a few years ago, no one in London was interested in low carb products, but now the keto diet is catching on similarly to what happened in Australia five years ago,” Mellor added.
