In a move towards more sustainable spirits production, Brisbane-based beverage company Mandatory Spirit Co has launched its liquor in a 1.5l Bag-in-Box packaging (BIB) – an Australian first for spirits.

The company says the new packaging is designed to extend the shelf-life of beverages while keeping a very low carbon footprint. By using a lightweight box shape, unused space is minimised and transport capacity optimised.

In comparison, a truck transporting the boxes holds the same volume as seven trucks carrying glass bottles.

Aside from the new shape, the box packaging comes with a coloured pourer made from 100 per cent recyclable material.

“By creating these spirits, Aussies can have a bit of fun and get creative with making their favourite cocktails while purchasing spirits in a far more sustainable way,” said Mark Collins, co-founder of Mandatory Spirit Co.

“They’re also perfect for taking to picnics or parties whilst also not having to worry about carrying around a glass bottle.”

Mandatory Spirits sells gin and vodka in Bag-in-Box packaging through BWS and Dan Murphy’s stores at RRP $84.95.
