Sara Lee’s Australian and NZ businesses saved by private acquisition

Sara Lee's Australian and NZ businesses saved by private acquisition

Dessert brand Sara Lee’s Australian and New Zealand businesses have been sold to a private company owned by Klark and Brooke Quinn.

The sale – which includes export deals to Southeast Asia and the Middle East – will see the brand continue and help secure the jobs of more than 200 workers.

Last year, the company went into voluntary administration with Vaughan Strawbridge, Joseph Hansell, and Kathryn Evans of FTI Consulting as administrators.

Commenting on the sale, Strawbridge said the administrators are pleased to see Sara Lee’s team come through the process.

“Staff and consumers have rallied behind the business during this tough time, and we are so grateful to the loyal workforce and management team who have made this process successful while they have continued producing amazing products,” said Strawbridge.

“In addition to the staff, we would also like to thank all the suppliers who have continued to support the business and the customers, who have been vital to the continuation of the business. We look forward to its future success.”

The Quinn family, who have been successful in FMCG businesses, most recently purchasing Darrell Lea out of voluntary administration in 2012, expressed their excitement about taking over the brand and putting their stamp on it.

“We are a small Aussie family that shared the tradition of having Sara Lee Apple Pie and Vanilla Ice-cream every Sunday night at the dinner table and could not be more proud to put the Aussie-made and owned stamp on the Sara Lee brand,” said Klark and Brooke Quinn.

The sale is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Established in 1971 in Lisarow, NSW, Sara Lee manufactures desserts, including frozen cheesecakes, pies, crumbles and ice cream. It trades as Sara Lee under license from the global owner of the trademark, with rights to operate in Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and the Middle East.
