Melbourne-based developer Beulah has joined forces with Sydney’s Greenspace, a pioneer in community vertical farming, to launch Melbourne’s inaugural urban farm at the Southbank site earmarked for the construction of STH BNK By Beulah.
The 200sqm Southbank macrofarm will feature a variety of microgreens, herbs, and salads, bringing the concept of urban farming to the heart of the city.
Beulah said its long-term goal is to incorporate community vertical farming into the completed tower project, providing residents and workers access to healthy, organic, low-carbon fresh food.
Greenspace’s operations seek to reduce carbon emissions by ensuring that produce travels less than 2km from farm to table.
Moreover, its hydroponic farming techniques use up to 95 per cent less water than traditional farming methods and can produce at least four times more in the same area, preventing land degradation and unnecessary land clearing.
Adelene Teh, executive director of Beulah, said the project exemplifies the company’s dedication to community well-being and environmental sustainability.
“This collaboration with Greenspace marks a shift towards more sustainable, community-focused partnerships that harmonise nature with urban living,” remarked Teh. “Vertical farming is undoubtedly the future.”
Alongside the Melbourne location, Greenspace has two active vertical farms in Sydney. STH BNK By Beulah is due to commence early work this year and will take approximately five years to complete.
The initiative has also garnered support from local businesses, including ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, Deloitte, Compass, Foodbuy, Hyatt, Sheraton, W Hotels, Novotel, Zurich Insurance, Trippas White Group, and Two Good Co.
