Solid rolls out eco-friendly oral care range in New Zealand

Solid has launched its range of eco-friendly oral care products – including toothpaste tablets and mouthwash – at New World supermarkets in New Zealand. And the company’s first export shipment to Australia is on its way.

The Porirua-based company was established by Laura Nixon, a previous oral health therapist who felt frustrated with the lack of plastic-free options in the dental industry.

“We encourage customers to return their jars, and we always hear from people that they feel good about themselves doing it,” shared Nixon. “People are looking for sustainable options, and if you can create it and make it easy, people will support it.”

Last year, Laura, together with his partner and co-founder Adam Nixon – who said he left his job as an advisor to entrepreneurs after realising he was living with one – joined Foodstuffs Emerge, a competition that allows up-and-coming companies to fast-track their products to New World shelves across Aotearoa.

“We were just happy to be there, so winning was a complete surprise and delight,” said Adam.

While promoting sustainability and oral health is a chief focus, Laura says her newest priority is getting to know the New World community.

“The opportunity to be in the supermarket is just amazing, and we want to stay on the shelves and be successful,” Laura concluded. “Toothpaste isn’t particularly sexy, but we like to think we’re making it more interesting and exciting for people.”

Solid is now preparing to launch new flavours and formats.
