AFGC to host grocery code training workshops

supermarket, aisleThe finalisation of the Food and Grocery Code is a step to change the way in which supplier/ retailer negotiations are conducted – and understanding its implications could be the difference between success and failure in the FMCG sector, says the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC).

The voluntary code prohibits specific types of unfair conduct by retailers and wholesalers in their dealings with suppliers and provides a clearer framework for these dealings.

It complements existing protections for suppliers under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, including the unconscionable conduct provisions. Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, and Sydney-based retailer, About Life, have signed up to the code, which came into effect in July 2015.

The AFGC in conjunction with NextGen are offering a comprehensive training program and accreditation for food and grocery suppliers into the retail supermarket industry.

The program, delivered by NextGen, runs over a full day delivering a practical approach to all the code elements and obligations, centered on real world case studies, and explores all major issues that occur in the supplier / retailer commercial relationship.

The AFGC says there are five critical sections to the training program:

1. The role of the new Grocery Supply Agreement (GSA)

2. Code obligations and their intent and application i.e. waste and shrinkage, deductions, promotions etc.

3. The impact on the trading relationship

4. Consideration on how to manage the code in your day to day engagement with customers

5. Delegate assessment

Code training program will be run throughout 2015 with the following programs available:

Tuesday, October 13 in Brisbane

Tuesday, October 20 in Sydney

Thursday, October 22 in Melbourne

Monday, November 16 in Sydney

Tuesday, November 17 in Melbourne
