Just one in five Aussies eat meat daily now

The COVID-19 pandemic has also proven to be a barrier, with the majority stating COVID-19 has impacted their overall health and attitudes to healthy eating.

New research from Toluna reveals that Australia’s meat consumption is on a decline, with only 20 per cent of respondents eating meat daily. Although the survey sample was relatively small – just 1026 people – the result was clear.

According to the study, the biggest concern for reducing meat intake is health concerns (65 per cent), followed by the cost of meat (40 per cent),  environmental reasons (30 per cent), and moral reasons (12 per cent).

Sej Patel, country director for Toluna, says health is a top priority for shoppers, and retailers need to take note.

“Our research shows that health concerns are weighing heavily on Australians, with health being the number one driving factor for the majority of our dietary decisions, which ultimately drive our purchasing decisions,” said Patel

“Even though a minimal number of Australians are currently following a vegan diet, a surprisingly large number are actively reducing their meat intake and are looking to eat plant-based meat alternatives instead.”

The study shows that Australians want to eat better than they currently do, with 69 per cent of the respondents wanting their diet to be “very healthy” in the future.

One in four respondents said they had tried out plant-based meat alternatives and a majority of them said they’d continue to purchase them in the future.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also proven to be a barrier, with the majority stating it has impacted their overall health and attitudes to healthy eating.

“Australian consumers are wanting to improve their eating habits and are actively seeking out healthy food and drink alternatives across a range of categories. Retailers and brands can capitalise on this trend by ensuring they communicate to consumers the health benefits of their products., Patel added.
