Woolworths listing shows hemp foods are moving mainstream

Byron Bay’s Hemp Foods Australia says its organic Hemp Gold Seed Oil will be listed in more than 100 Woolworths stores across the country from this month.

That follows a line extension for Hemp Foods’ oil in Costco after the successful launch of the brand there late last year.

Felipe Favaro, GM at Hemp Foods Australia, says the expanded retail footprint reflects “increasing consumer demand for hemp food products and plant-based diets” and hemp’s growing mainstream appeal.

“These recent partnerships with two of Australia’s leading shopping chains … underpin our strategy to drive wider national distribution so we can provide more people with the amazing nutritional and health benefits of hemp products,” said Favaro.

Hemp Foods Australia is a division of ASX-listed Sydney-headquartered company Elixinol Wellness.

Beata Silber, the global head of R&D and innovation at Hemp Foods Australia, says the acceptance of hemp as an ingredient is now moving beyond just skincare products, for which it has traditionally been known. “Many hemp-derived foods such as hemp seeds and oil are coming to the market. Product innovation in foods containing hemp continues to grow, with one such trend being hemp-based protein,” she said.

The company is now working to create new products such as flavoured protein powders, which offer a 100-per-cent plant-based meal replacement, as well as a hemp paste that can be used by manufacturers in foods including ice creams, yoghurts, snack bars and soups, to enhance existing or new products.

“We see innovation in hemp food products core to our ongoing growth and a key differentiator from many other hemp brands in the market,” said Silber.

Hemp Food Australia’s products are also available in health food stores such as Healthy Life and Go Vita, and selected IGA and Harris Farms stores.
