Australian grocery retailer Drakes will shortly begin constructing its 69th store – on the former Coles supermarket site in the heart of Mount Gambier.

The store has been vacant for four years and Drakes will shortly commence a full renovation of the building before opening under the new banner late this year.

Roger Drake, MD of Drakes, said the new flagship will improve the Mount Gambier community’s shopping experience, featuring various grocery products and including Drakes’ Little Kitchen concept, which serves hot meals or on-the-go options, and a ‘cafe wall’.

He said the company was proud to bring the abandoned store back to life for the Mount Gambier community. He has a personal connection with the building, having managed the Coles store more than 50 years ago before launching his own grocery chain.

“It’s a full circle moment for me,” said Drake. “I was once told I’d never make it in this industry. Coming back to revive this store for the Mount Gambier community is something I’m incredibly proud of.”

He promised Drakes would partner with the city.

“We have a proud history and commitment to reinvesting our profits back into the state and communities in which we live and operate,” he said. “We understand that the customer is our boss, if they’re not happy, we’re not happy.”

Roger Drake’s son John-Paul (JP), said the Blue Lake City has been abandoned for far too long. “South Australia doesn’t just end at Adelaide.

“I’m so happy Coles told Dad he would never make it in this very store. We’re looking forward to getting this support from the people of Mount Gambier and becoming a part of the local community.

“Drakes is committed to providing the Mount Gambier community with a trusted, family-owned store, that delivers exceptional value, high-quality products, competitive prices and the outstanding customer service the community deserves.”
