Wagalot launches dog food range made from surplus produce

Pet brand Wagalot has launched an Australian-first initiative that turns surplus market produce into dog food.

As part of the initiative, the company has introduced Dogood, a premium range of dog treats and meal boosters, in partnership with sustainability leaders Eco Guardians.

The range rescues otherwise unavoidable surplus produce from Melbourne’s Prahran Market, and transforms it into a nutritious, vet-endorsed product for pets.

According to the company, for every kilogram of Dogood produced, up to 10kg of surplus produce is diverted from landfill.

The initiative uses Eco Guardians’ on-site dehydration technology to process surplus produce directly at the market, reducing waste at the source and creating a closed-loop system.

“Reducing landfill is the key to reducing carbon emissions, and by processing it onsite, we further reduce the environmental impact,” said Wagalot founder Alice Needham.

Eco Guardians’ head of sustainability and partnerships, Sophie Thorne, added: “The real opportunity here is scale.

“If models like this were adopted more widely across markets and supply chains, the impact on Australia’s food waste problem could be significant.”

Wagalot also plans to donate half of all Dogood profits to animal and environmental charities.
