New Zealand snack manufacturer Bluebird has unveiled its new automated warehouse, which boasts a state-of-the-art automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) costing $24.3 million.
This ASRS is one of the largest in New Zealand and can hold 13,500 pallets of chips.
Over the past three years, Bluebird has invested $37 million in upgrading the technology, improving employee facilities, and enhancing the environmental performance of the business.
The new warehouse spans 3300sqm with an elevation of 28m and will help increase operational efficiency by optimising space and reducing material handling and product waste.
Bluebird GM Michelle Cassettari, says the ASRS warehouse is one of Bluebird’s biggest projects since PepsiCo acquired the brand in 2007.
“This investment into the facilities represents the growing demand for our iconic snacks that Kiwis know and love,” said Cassettari.
“We produce an astounding amount of chips, close to half a million bags per day, and the new ASRS will allow us to keep up with demand and operate more efficiently and sustainably by reducing truck movements and pallet usage.”
The company added that it remains committed to sustainability and continuously explores innovative ways to reduce its environmental impact.
Currently, the Wiri site recycles over 90 per cent of all waste materials, including dirt, peels, packaging, cardboard, and plastic. The site has achieved a 28 per cent reduction in water usage over the last five years, and it is powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.
Bluebird is one of the biggest snack food manufacturers in New Zealand. Its products include Bluebird Potato Chips, Doritos Corn Chips, Grain Waves, Twisties, Rashuns, Burger Rings and Cheezels.
