Conga Foods has brought the Italian gelato brand Sammontana to Australia, sold in tubs and ice cream sticks.

Established in 1946, the Sammontana began as a dairy shop in Empoli, Tuscany. Two years later, Renzo Bagnoli and his brothers Loriano and Sergio launched an artisan ice cream shop that eventually expanded into the gelato company it is today.

Compared with standard ice cream, Italian gelato is made using a similar custard base as traditional ice cream but has a higher amount of milk and less cream and eggs (or no eggs at all). It is churned slower, incorporating less air and leaving the gelato denser than traditional ice cream.

The range of flavours in the 800ml gelato tubs includes Pistachio, Hazelnut, Cappuccino, Stracciatella, Panna Cotta, Croccantino, Amarena, Strawberry & Lemon duo and Chocolate.

While the gelato sticks, called Gruvi, are coated with almonds and cookies and are available in three flavours: Pistachio, Croccantino, and Stracciatella.

Sammontana is available in Woolworths and Independent Supermarkets at RRP$10.00 for a pack of four Gruvi sticks and $12.00 for an 800ml gelato tub
