Peters Ice Cream has combined two of its brand offerings with the launch of the Maxibon Barney Banana, merging the Barney Banana bar flavour with Maxibon’s signature dual-ended sandwich.
The company says the product line responds to extended online consumer campaigns requesting the return of the banana flavour, which entered the market in 1958 and previously saw brief limited-edition revivals in 2009 and 2017.
The Maxibon Barney Banana features a banana-flavoured ice cream centre split between two serving styles: one half sandwiched between chocolate biscuits, and the opposite half dipped in a chocolate coating with vanilla biscuit crumbs.
The item is available in two formats: multipacks at an RRP of $11.5 and single units at an RRP of $5.6, and is distributed at Coles, Woolworths, independent supermarkets, petrol stations and convenience stores
The product release targets consumer interest in nostalgic food offerings, citing industry data indicating that 42 per cent of buyers show interest in trying familiar flavours with updated formulations.
“Barney Banana is one of those products Aussies have an incredible amount of nostalgia for. We knew if we were going to bring him back, we had to do it in a way they wouldn’t expect,” said Peters Ice Cream CMO, Andrea Hamori.
“Pairing that iconic banana flavour with Maxibon felt like the perfect way to give an Aussie favourite a new lease on life. We think longtime Barney fans are going to go bananas for it, while those meeting the Aussie icon for the first time might just discover a new freezer favourite. It might even turn the heads of a few banana deniers along the way,” said Hamori.
In June, Peters Ice Cream teamed with Milo to release miniature drumstick cones.
